Why is ADSL better than Dialup - Free Mailbox - Anti-Virus & Anti-Spam - Download Speed - Fair usage policy (FUP)

Why is ADSL better than Dialup?
Life is full of hard choices, but in the case of broadband Internet services, one thing is crystal-clear: ADSL is far quicker than any dial-up connections. And now, with Omantel’s migration to ADSL2+, your Internet experience will be even faster.

In fact, most of the web pages load at least 5 times faster using ADSL than they do over dial-up. Plus, dialup is not recommended to download files, stream video, or send big e-mail attachments. If you need to access files on server, regularly move around big chunks of data, or surf the Net one hour per day, you'll save money every month with an ADSL connection.

Speed

Typical downstream ADSL speed is roughly 25 times faster than standard dialup modems. Omantel infrastructure is now supporting ADSL2+, which means that download speeds can even support up to 24 Mbps!

Always on
Because it is either always connected, or connects very quickly, ADSL is more convenient than having to dial up with a conventional modem. In addition, with ADSL you can call and browse at the same time, in comparison, with a dialup connection, you will not be able to receive or to make calls when you surf.

Download Speed:

Download speed is the time it takes for the data you are requesting (a web page, a picture, etc) to load onto your computer. Generally, the higher the bandwidth of your line, the quicker the transfer of information (and download speed) will be. If you subscribe to 4 Mbps, you will enjoy download speeds 4 times faster than the 1 Mbps package.

Download speeds have to be understood as maximum speeds. In reality, some parameters will affect the download speed.

The key element is the distance from the exchange. If your house or company is located far from the telecom exchange, you download speed will be affected – this is a reality across in the world. Usually, Omantel does not recommend installing ADSL when the customer is located 5 km and more from the exchange.

In addition, if everybody connects at the same time, the overall bandwidth will be shared amongst all the users. If you need to achieve critical task, please try to avoid the peak times (evenings and week ends).

The opposite of download is upload, which means to copy a file from your own computer to another computer.

Fair usage policy (FUP):

A very small number of customers who constantly send and receive video and other very large files use a lot of bandwidth.  This can significantly reduce the speed at which other customers can access the internet.

By having a fair usage policy of FUP, Omantel can protect the service for all of its customers through interventions that manage the bandwidth of these extremely heavy users.

How Fair Usage Policy Works

Omantel will continuously monitor network performance and may restrict the speed available to very heavy users. This applies to customers on Home ADSL 512 Kbps and 8 Mbps Unlimited packages who actually reach a certain threshold of traffic. Customer in those situations will be contacted by Omantel and their speeds will be reduced until the next month
